In the beginning I had an innate knowing that something was missing in my life. I didn't know exactly what is was that I was missing, only that I knew there was an aspect of my life that I needed to re-connect with. Over time, I began to have spiritual experiences that heightened in intensity and became more frequent.
It can be overwhelming to have such intense spiritual experiences when you aren't even sure what it is that is happening in the first place! They gave me mixed feelings; on one hand I re-discovered parts of myself but on the other hand I felt very isolated and lonely. I needed help processing these experiences and started searching for answers in every way that I could. As my awakening continued, I began to hear the term "Sacred Space" more and more. I was drawn to this term but I didn't know why, and in asking about it I was told that this spiritual tool could help me find some solace with what I had been experiencing.
As I began to research (A LOT) and listen to the advice of new friends and teachers, I was drawn to certain spiritual items. I intuitively knew I wanted to use them but how? Where do I use them? Why do I need them? I had so many questions running through my head about a process that I knew I needed but wasn't sure how to exactly accomplish. Slowly, with trial and error, and a little more research, I began to figure out what a sacred space means to ME and just how important it can be on your spiritual journey!
Is there a difference between an "altar" and a "Sacred Space"?
While you hear the words being used interchangeably, yes I believe there is a difference!
A Sacred Space I would define as a place that is separate of other places. Usually it is a quiet meditative space that helps you focus your attention and energy. A place that’s devoted to your dreams, your yearns, your whispers and your souls questions. A place to renew and to rest. It can be a meditation corner, a room or it can even be your whole house! The point of your sacred space is that it is a place where your intentions matter and it empowers you. Some people are more drawn outside the home and that's great too! It can also be a special place in nature that helps you to recharge, gain insight and inspiration. Your sacred space is what intuitively feels right for you and for what you need.
An altar means "high place". It is a specific part in a space, usually something flat, where you can focus your energy towards your goals, dreams, prayers and affirmations. This space can hold a collection of items that would be significant to you and your spirituality; any deities you worship, altar tools, elemental representation (earth, wind, fire, water) crystals or special items that remind you of someone or something. Typically an altar would stay in one place and would be in an area that you can easily access and visit frequently. I currently have an altar in my Sacred Space, in my bedroom and in my office.
What can I do in my Sacred Space?
Whatever you decide to do in your sacred space is completely up to you. There's not a "right way" to do it, your spirituality is as unique as you are. For me, I have intended my space to be a place to perform self-care rituals, meditate, journal and find peace of mind. A place where I can be with my personal thoughts and I can process and transmute energy.
What is a self-care ritual?
A self-care ritual or ceremony is a deeply spiritual process performed in a sacred space to honor someone, something or to help release or direct energy according to an intention. Anytime you perform a ritual or ceremony, your intention is key! The intention I would argue is the most important part of the process. Decide what you want from your sacred space and what it would mean to you and direct that energy through your rituals.
Overall creating your own Sacred Space is a very personal process. No matter what kind of spirituality your attracted to, creating a space and an altar provides a powerful focal point for your energy. Your Sacred Space is a reflection of you, and as Rebecca Campbell says, "a space that acts as an invitation for the universe to support you."
